A shared spirit

Ever since she was a child, Hannah had always been fascinated with precious gemstones. Her passion for these extraordinary rocks only deepened over time. During a post-university trip to Sri Lanka, Hannah worked for a family-run gemstone firm - absorbing every aspect of the wider industry.
Inspired to set up her own business, Hannah was determined to create pieces in a more ethical, sustainable and fair way. Since day one, Hannah’s close relationships and higher ethical standards see all parts of the supply chain treated fairly and recognised for their contribution.
Hannah’s initial jewellery line - Hannah May London - was delicate and traditionally ‘pretty’, reflecting a more conventional feminine aesthetic. But events in Hannah’s life would cause her to rethink everything.
Dealing with unwelcome challenges in her life was both self affirming and empowering and the catalyst for creation.
“After what I had been through, I wanted to make a collection that was bold and powerful. Reflecting on the idea, I was drawn to my grandmother Jean. A fiercely independent soul, she embodied all of these values. Jean was a fighter, a female pioneer, and now my inspiration.’
- Hannah
Much like Hannah, Jean fought her own battles in life – particularly against the patriarchy. During the 1950s, being a woman meant adhering to a set of societal standards rather than being true to one’s self. At that time, a teenage single woman working in the press would have caused a stir but this only encouraged Jean further. She controlled her destiny, changing attitudes and preconceptions with her journalistic capabilities.
‘I wanted my new designs to capture Jean’s passion and confidence, moving from pretty and delicate to bold and accomplished.’
- Hannah
The Jean concept immerged from common experience; a bond between two women who overcame adversity, inspiring many others to do the same. This makes Jean more than a jewellery brand. It is the manifestation of a shared spirit. Each piece a symbol of our potential to do more, be more and become even more powerful.
Jean is an expression of the inner strength that lies within us all.
